"Microplastics are small (<5mm in diameter) plastic particles which are introduced into the environment through clothing, cosmetics, industrial processes and the breakdown of plastic waste.
The Gaia Foundation will host a Microplastics workshop which will be held on Ramla Bay on the 19th of May 2018.
Microplastics have been targeted by Gaia during Beach Clean Ups a number of times, however we cannot solve this problem by ourselves. We are looking for as many people as possible to help us increase awareness.
During the workshop, the beach will be split up into sections and a number of people will be assigned to each section. We encourage people to be creative and make their own filtering mechanisms to remove the plastic from the sand. These can be very simple. For instance, by putting sand and plastic in a bucket of water, the sand will sink and the plastic will float. As an incentive, the best equipment will win a prize.
Kindly let me know if you would be interested in taking part in this educational experience by emailing gabriella@projectgaia.org
Together we can make Malta’s beaches cleaner!"

"Have you ever wondered what goes on at Ta Giordan Lighthouse research station? There are more than 30,000 large ships every year using the shipping "superhighway" between Malta and Sicily. Moreover Northwesterly winds blow more than 70% of the time across our land bringing with them whatever these ships dispense into the air. Professor Ray Ellul and his team at Xewkija and Ta Giordan are measuring the nature and effects of this atmospheric pollution in our skies. Hear what they have found out and discuss the difficult equation between healthy skies and the healthy economy that shipping contributes to." This event will be held on Wednesday 14 th March at The Duke, Republic Street, Victoria at 7.00 pm. For more information check this site: https://www.facebook.com/CafeSciGozo/
